Clergy Reflection – May 12, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Last year I was privileged to join Joanne Patton as her guest for an evening honoring Operation Troop Support. We gathered with many of their volunteers and supporters for a wonderful dinner, music, and awards ceremony. Joanne is one of the founders of OTS, and, as you might imagine, was well known and loved by the many people present. It was a joyful, enthusiastic crowd filled with love for their country and a passion for supporting our troops.

As this family-run organization says on their website “Over the past 10 years, thousands of care packages were sent to the war zone, the combat support hospitals, and the US military hospitals on a continuous basis to help raise the morale of our soldiers.” This is in addition to their many other troop support endeavors. You may learn more here:

On Saturday, May 20, St. John’s is pleased to host a care package pack. OTS will bring boxes and supplies, and St. John’s members are invited to join us in Celebration Hall to help pack the boxes with the supplies. The resulting care packages will be shipped off to soldiers in need of some love from home. This family-friendly outreach project will begin at 10am and last for a couple of hours. It should be an uplifting event with a real-world impact for our soldiers.

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, page 823).

You are very dear to me and to God in Christ.

Faithfully yours,
