Lay Assistants

Verger lighting the candles

New participants are always welcome!  If you are interested in any of these ministries, please go to the “Contact” page and send us an email message with “Lay Assistant” in the Subject line.

Why should adults have all the fun?  Eighth grade through high school students assist Sunday worship by serving at the altar as crucifers and torch bearers.  Work in teams with your friends in this very cool ministry.

Sign up to read Sunday scripture lessons at the 8 a.m. or 10 a.m. services.  The readings are mailed out to you in advance, and assistance is always available for questions about the readings.  Open to everyone, 8th Grade and up.

“Intercessors” is the official title for persons who lead the congregation in Sunday’s Prayers of the People.  It’s a nice, easy way to work your way into a role as a worship leader at St. John’s.

Chalice Bearers

Virtually any chalice bearer will tell you what a privilege it is to serve consecrated wine at the communion rail.  Chalice bearers are trained and licensed by the diocese, and serve on a rotating schedule.  Open to everyone who has been Confirmed.

It is said that we have one chance to make a lasting impression.  Sunday morning greeters play a vital part in the beginning of persons’ Sunday morning worship experience.  Making regular and new parishioners and visitors know they are welcome here is an important ministry, and a great way to get to know people.
